About Phatboy Custom Works
Phatboy Custom Works began during one of the most uncertain times in recent history. In 2020, when corporate decisions and global events threatened job security, I realized how quickly everything could change. I made a promise to myself that I would never let outside forces control my ability to provide for my family again. That promise grew into a passion.
While experimenting with woodworking at home, I became fascinated with live edge builds, epoxy art, and natural slab work. My first project — a cedar desk — was a complete disaster, but it lit a fire that’s still burning today. I dove headfirst into the craft, learning, experimenting, and dreaming bigger with each build.
In 2022, my family relocated from Washington State to North Carolina. We were looking for a fresh start and a community that valued craftsmanship. Shortly after arriving, the local mill in Canton announced its closure — a devastating blow to the region. But instead of slowing down, it strengthened my resolve. If I couldn’t rely on the old industry to build a future, I would build one myself.
In 2023, Phatboy Custom Works LLC became official. What started as a garage hobby has grown into a small independent shop offering live edge slabs, epoxy designs, lichtenberg burnt creations, and fully custom commissions — shaped by the mountains, the culture, and the resilience of Western North Carolina.
Today, I continue to hone my craft, explore new designs, and push the boundaries of what a small shop can do. Whether it’s a custom table, a unique slab, or a special piece that exists nowhere else, I bring the same dedication to every project:
creativity, craftsmanship, and respect for the wood.
Let’s make something custom.
